Every few days, I leave a stone on the cairn,

Or sing, out of tune, a line or two

Of Elmore James’s “Done Somebody Wrong,”

My mind on the hereafter’s sweet waters,

On what words might at last pin down or revoke,

Or moments when lightning simply is. Then isn’t.

Everything that happened, you know I am to blame. . . .

I leave a stone to mark my passage, not to account for it.
